FDM vs. Resin 3D Printing: Which Is Better for Your Project?

FDM and resin printing can both turn a digital model into a physical object, but they solve different problems well. Choosing between them should start with the part you need—not with which technology sounds more advanced.

How FDM printing works

Fused deposition modeling, usually called FDM, builds an object by depositing thermoplastic material layer by layer. It is the familiar process used by many desktop 3D printers and is exceptionally versatile.

FDM is well suited to functional parts, brackets, enclosures, prototypes, organizers, larger models, gaming accessories, fixtures, and many everyday projects. Material choices can include PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, reinforced materials, glow-in-the-dark filament, and other specialty options depending on the job.

How resin printing differs

Resin printers form parts from liquid photopolymer using light to cure each layer. The process can reproduce very fine surface detail and small features, making it attractive for miniatures, detailed display pieces, and models where fine geometry matters.

That detail comes with different material properties, post-processing requirements, and practical limitations. Resin is not automatically the best choice simply because it can produce finer detail.

Choose based on the job

For a large functional bracket, FDM will often be the more practical process. For a small highly detailed miniature, resin may have the advantage. A tabletop terrain piece could go either way depending on size, detail, durability, cost, and desired finish.

The geometry also matters. Thin walls, unsupported features, tolerances, orientation, and how a part will be loaded can influence both printability and process selection.

Material matters as much as the printer

Two FDM parts printed from different materials can behave very differently. Temperature exposure, UV exposure, impact, flexibility, rigidity, appearance, and dimensional requirements should influence material selection.

This is particularly important for functional pieces. A material that works beautifully for a display model may be inappropriate for a part that lives in a hot vehicle or outdoors.

What about gaming and tabletop projects?

3D printing and tabletop gaming overlap naturally. Miniatures, terrain, organizers, token holders, deck accessories, display stands, and other gaming pieces can all be candidates for printing. That connection is one reason 3D printing is part of the broader Gaming & Collectibles side of Nexus.

You do not need to choose blindly

If you already have a printable model, the practical approach is to evaluate the file and intended use before deciding on a process. Nexus can review customer-supplied files for printability and make corrections where appropriate, although we do not provide full 3D model design services.
